Freedom collage on cardboard

This collage started off as a demo for stenciling on cardboard to build up layers. Later I found a quote by Amelia Earhart and decided to make a collage around the sentiment in her quote. "The love of flying is the love of beauty. It was more beautiful up there than anything I had known." I chose to use butterflies to represent flying, as opposed to planes, to symbolize the struggle needed to emerge from a chrysalis.

Student work

As promised here are a few samples of the different types of collages done by my students at Comenius School for Creative Leadership .
This one is by Rebecca. The assignment was based on  Romare Beardon collage work. He used magazines and often worked in a series about one topic. Rebecca's theme was  metamorphosis.
This piece was Isabella's final personal collage. She loves superheroes and decided to do Spiderman. I love the black glitter in the sky.
This is another one by Rebecca. First she drew and painted the sparrow. The she painted the paper that was torn into small pieces to collage this piece. This assignment is based on the artist Elizabeth St. Hillaire-Nelson
This is a assemblage down by Sarai. It represents the beach and even includes sand her brother got her from a local golf course!

All these students are 12 and 13 years old.

Coming Home 30 x 40 acrylic on canvas

I recently finished this canvas. I've been working on taking the large drawings I did last summer and using them as springboards for new paintings. Now that the school year is coming to a close, I hope to get back to pairing on a more daily basis and posting my progress.
